How long does Fake Tan Last?

Fake tanning has become a popular way to achieve a sun-kissed glow without exposing your skin to the harmful effects of the sun and UV rays that can be the cause of premature ageing and skin cancer. But one of the most common questions that people have, is how long their fake tan will last once applied. The answer is that it depends on a few different factors, so let's take a closer look.

How does Fake Tan work?

First of all, it's important to understand that fake tanning products work by temporarily colouring the top layer of your skin with an ingredient called DHA. DHA is the active tanning ingredient in self-tanners and it tans the skin by reacting (oxidising) with the amino acids found naturally in our outer skin layers. This causes a tanning effect which shows within a few hours. This means that the longevity of your fake tan will depend on how quickly your skin naturally sheds its dead skin cells, as this is what will cause the colour to fade. At He-Shi we use 100% natural DHA in our tanning products so you don't have to worry about any chemical nasties being put on your skin.

What tanning product should I choose?

The type of fake tanning product you use can also affect how long your tan lasts. Self-tanning lotions and mousses tend to fade more quickly than spray tans or professional airbrush tans, as these latter methods typically use more concentrated formulas that can penetrate deeper into the skin. The depth of your tan is dependent on your skin colour and the DHA levels within your tan. Typically, formulations with 1-4% DHA result in a light colour, 5-8% result in a medium colour and 9-10% in a dark colour.

How do I prolong the length of my tan application?

In general, you can expect your fake tan to last anywhere from 5-7 days, depending on the factors mentioned above. However, there are a few things you can do to help extend the life of your fake tan:

Exfoliate before you tan

This will help to remove any dead skin cells that might flake off more quickly, which can help your tan to last longer. We recommend using our Tan Remover and Primer to prep and prime the skin, by using fruit acids to slough off dead skin cells and leaving skin smooth and ready for your next tan application.

Moisturize regularly

Keeping your skin hydrated can help to prevent your fake tan from fading too quickly.

Avoid sweating and showering for a few hours after tanning

This will give your fake tan time to fully develop and set on your skin.

Use a gradual tanning lotion

If you're looking for a longer-lasting fake tan, try using a gradual tanning lotion instead of a one-time self-tanner. These products can help to build up a natural-looking tan over time, which can last for several weeks with regular use.

In summary, the longevity of your fake tan will depend on several factors, including the type of product you use and how quickly your skin naturally sheds its dead skin cells. By following the tips above, you can help to extend the life of your fake tan and enjoy a beautiful, sun-kissed glow for as long as possible.
